Windows 10 pre-release build 10041

Well, I wish I could say something nice about this build, but it completely freaks out the nVidia GTX-550tx video card. The screen would go black, the video card fan would spin at a high rate, and I would lose video. I could not ping the system afterwards. At this point, I had to remove the video card.

Here’s hoping the next monthly build solves the video problem.

Windows 10 pre-release observations

Some observations about the latest Windows 10 beta:

  • The keyboard LEDs FINALLY work *sigh* (nothing like pooching something that has worked for over 25 years) .
  • Cortana takes up a rather sizable portion of the task bar and wants access to everything except your mitochondrial DNA, just like the other search engines.
  • The UI is definitely better than Metro, and many third party apps are finally signed properly and work.
  • The Start button is closer to behaving like Windows 7 rather than Windows 8.1.
